The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has rejuvenated the Marvel brand and allowed many superheroes to take the stage both on the big screen and on television. As such, fans were excited by the announcement that Amazon would be getting in on the action with two new Marvel shows. While one is still set to move forward, it’s sadly been revealed that one other Marvel series has been canceled.
This may come as a shock – especially with its counterpart still on the way. However, according to a new report, this does line up with the fact that this particular Marvel series hasn’t received any mention since Amazon had their first upfront presentation. Interestingly, they do intend on further collaborating with the former project’s showrunner, Angela Kang.
As noted by Deadline:
“The project’s showrunner, well regarded Walking Dead alum Angela Kang, remains under an overall deal at Amazon MGM Studios where she will work on other projects.”
The canceled series is none other than Silk: Spider Society, which was announced around the same time as Noir, a television series focusing on the Noir version of Spider-Man which will be played by Nicolas Cage. He previously voiced the character for Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films. Sadly, it looks like Silk will not be as lucky making their way to the screen.
Additionally, the outlet was able to share the following regarding the status between Amazon Prime Video and Sony:
“Amazon’s commitment to the suite of live-action series based on the Sony Pictures Universe of 900 Spider-Man & Co. Marvel characters also remains in place. Rights to the Silk character, created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, revert back to lead studio Sony Pictures Television, which is looking to shop the series to other buyers.”
It appears that Silk has simply faced a troubled development period, with various different creative personnel attached over the years. Unfortunately, it seems the proper direction couldn’t be conceived, so they chose instead to focus their resources on Noir.
As such, we’ll have to see if Silk: Spider Society manages to find a home elsewhere, or if the project will stay dead. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
