Since it’s inception back in 2013 with Man of Steel, the DCEU has been trying it’s best to differentiate itself from it’s main rivals, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Besides it’s general darker tone, the studio has also bypassed solo film’s introducing the characters in favour of Team-up films right off the bat (No pun intended). But now we know one other familiar Marvel trope that Warner Brothers won’t using.
If you cast your mind back to March 28th, a mere three days after the release of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, you may remember that Warner Brothers released a deleted scene from the film titled ‘Communion’. This deleted scene saw Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor being confronted by future Justice League villain Steppenwolf just before being taken into custody by a S.W.A.T team. Many fans saw this as damage control in regards to the film’s poor reception, but now the film’s director, Zack Snyder has revealed the real reason behind this.
Last week the press was invited to the set of next years Justice League, where Sean O’Connell of Cinema Blend asked Snyder about this scene to which he explained:
“That scene was our way of … I felt like, ‘Oh, that’d be a cool after-credits sequence, but then I was like, ‘I don’t know. Can I do that?’ Because Marvel does that. Is that a thing? We were like, ‘Oh, maybe there’s another way to do it.”
Given how the scene takes place before the film’s conclusion it wouldn’t have made much sense for it to have been placed after credits, so this reason doesn’t seem to hold up to a great deal of scrutiny. If they had wanted the scene to have been seen by the audience it would have made more sense to have included it in the film itself.
We can see the film as it was intended when the ultimate edition of the film is released July 19th and we can see Steppenwolf again in Justice League when it hit theaters November 17th, 2017.
