The Marvel Cinematic Universe is widely known for its various box office successes, many of which have become some of the highest-grossing films of all-time and propelled the MCU into one of the biggest franchises ever. However, that doesn’t mean the studio has a perfect track record, and it turns out that The Marvels is officially the biggest box office bomb of 2023.
The sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and 2022’s Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel faced plenty of difficulties on its way to the big screen. And while some fans were hopeful that it would succeed, others had their doubts. Then, in addition to facing backlash from even more critical fans, it turns out that The Marvels was a loss for Disney.
According to Deadline, The Marvels was such a massive box office bomb, that it actually lost Disney somewhere around $237 million. This number was decided by looking at the film’s box office numbers, revenue streams, and placing those numbers against Disney’s expenses.
As for the total overall revenue, including box office and home video, the film made somewhere around $218 million. However, expenses including production costs and marketing add up to somewhere around $455 million. Thus the $237 million loss.
The film was just one in a long list of movies that were considered 2023’s box office bombs. However, The Marvels certainly performed the worst out of the bunch. Especially when considering it lost Disney more than $200 million. Interestingly, more than a few of last year’s bombs were Disney releases, so it’s no surprise that the studio has been rethinking its release strategies.

At this rate, it’s unknown what might happen with the Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Marvels brands, but it’s likely that the characters still won’t be gone for long. However, audiences probably shouldn’t bet on another stand-alone movie.
