The Resident Evil film franchise began with 2002’s Resident Evil. It launched a series of financially successful films loosely based on the hit video games. A more faithful film adaptation of the original two games was released in 2021, and now it looks like a new Resident Evil movie is in the works.
As of this writing, it has yet to be officially announced. According to a new rumor, however, Screen Gems is reportedly working on a new Resident Evil project. They’ve been involved via Sony with all of the films in the franchise thus far, including 2021’s reboot.
The rumor comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman. On that note, it’s unknown at this time whether or not the new movie will follow the events of that 2021 installment – which left room for a sequel – or a new story altogether. It’s possible that the new film could act as another new adaptation of any of the hit video games in the series. And, perhaps less likely, the film could be a sequel to the original series of six live-action Resident Evil films which ran from 2002 to 2016.
Though die-hard fans of the games were displeased, the aforementioned six films were rather successful at the box office. In fact, they’ve grossed over $1 billion worldwide, which makes the series one of the biggest horror franchises in the market. It’s really no surprise, then, that Sony is working on new films that are both profitable and appealing to fans.
The most recent movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, didn’t exactly succeed at the box office. However, it was released during the COVID-19 pandemic which obviously hurt the film’s performance. Otherwise, it does leave things open for a sequel, with a post-credits scene featuring popular game characters Albert Wesker and Ada Wong.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Resident Evil franchise, including video games, television, and feature films, as we have them. Hopefully this new film will deliver something truly enjoyable for all fans of the franchise.
