The Disney Plus MCU series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law introduced Tatiana Maslany as the titular character. Fans seemed divided by the series, with some being particularly more aggressive. Now Tatiana Maslany has opened up about the sexist Marvel fans that criticized the series and her performance as the fan-favorite comic book character.
Maslany revealed her thoughts while speaking with The Independent. Rather carefully, however, she explains that series creator Jessica Gao had the foresight to poke fun at the inevitable backlash while making the series. As such, Maslany says it was “part of the fun.”
Here’s what Tatiana Maslany shared regarding the sexist fans to The Independent:
“I think what’s exciting…exciting, ha. I think what’s fun about it is that [series creator] Jessica Gao built into the story that people were going to troll us,” Maslany said. “When we started to get the same responses that [Gao] had actually baked into the writing, it felt like part of the fun.”
As for her comments regarding Disney CEO Bob Iger, she called him “completely out of touch” during the SAG-AFTRA strike that took place in late 2023. The comments were made after he’d suggested that the demands made by actors were “unrealistic.” Now Maslany addresses these comments following the outcome of the strike:
“In those moments, you’re so heated up. It’s hard to articulate yourself in a way that you want when you’re on the picket line with everybody,” Maslany explains.
In an effort to explain her difficulties, Maslany reminds that she had to share self-taped auditions from her living room:
“You send these tapes into the void, you never get responses, you never get any feedback and you’re working! You’re filming yourself and having to edit yourself, which is also the stuff that makes you so self-conscious.”
It’s definitely been a difficult few years to be an actor, so all the more power to Maslany for performing in She-Hulk and having a good mindset against the backlash that some fans sparked. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Tatiana Maslany and her career as we have them.
