The Scary Movie franchise first began after the success of Wes Craven’s Scream. The following films continued to parody similar popular horror films of their time. Now it’s been revealed that Paramount is officially working on a reboot of the Scary Movie brand.
This announcement was shared by Variety, and furthermore, “Paramount Pictures announced that it is partnering with ‘Fast and Furious‘ mega-producer Neal H. Moritz to resurrect the dormant franchise.” The outlet adds that the film is set to begin production as soon as this year:
“‘Scary Movie’ is going into production in the fall of 2024,” the outlet adds, “and should hit theaters in 2025.”
As the outlet reminds, there have been a number of new successful horror films released in recent years. This would easily provide more than enough new material to parody and make fun of. Titles that they suggest include Five Nights at Freddy’s, Smile, and M3GAN.
The film “is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution. The indie label is a joint venture between Paramount and BeIN. Miramax recently announced that it has a new CEO in former MGM chief Jonathan Glickman.”
The most recent installment in the franchise, Scary Movie 5, was released back in 2013. However, the final appearance of franchise mainstays Anna Faris and Regina Hall happened in 2006’s Scary Movie 4. Fans would no doubt be happy to see Faris and Hall return for a Scary Movie reboot, especially after nearly two decades and with all the more films to make fun of that have been released since then.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Scary Movie franchise as we have them. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon now that the project has been officially announced by Paramount.
