The Spider-Man brand has been moving in a number of different directions in recent years. Fans have been treated to animated adaptations, villain-centric spin-offs, and Spider-Man stories set in the actual Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, fans are also eager for a return to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy – and now Sam Raimi has responded to rumors claiming he’ll direct Spider-Man 4.
Sam Raimi was initially supposed to direct Spider-Man 4 not long after the release of Spider-Man 3. However, due to the film’s mixed reception, Sony opted to reboot the brand instead. They made The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Andrew Garfield replacing Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. Then they choose to reboot again by teaming up with Marvel Studios for a new series of Spider-Man stories.
Tom Holland has played the part of the MCU’s Spider-Man. And, in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, he had the opportunity to meet both Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character. This is where rumors of Spider-Man 4 started, as fans now saw Maguire’s character reintroduced.
Now, while speaking with CBR at WonderCon, Sam Raimi was finally able to comment on the rumors. Here’s what he shared:
“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” he began. “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’”
“I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey again in it,” Sam added.
He also commented on whether or not Tobey Maguire would be willing to return for Spider-Man 4 and what his relationship with Marvel is like:
“I haven’t talked to Tobey about [a fourth movie with me], but maybe Marvel has or Columbia Pictures,” Sam said. “I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works.”
