Peter Jackson has led a rather varied career over the decades. This culminated with the hugely successful The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Unfortunately, some of his subsequent projects have been less successful, and that includes his biggest box office movie flop. Now, however, the Peter Jackson flop appears to have found new life on Netflix.
It’s worth noting that the film is actually one of the biggest box office flops of all time. On a budget estimated between $100 million and $150 million, it only grossed $83.7 million at the box office. As such, the film is estimated to have lost the studio as much as $175 million.
Interestingly, Peter Jackson didn’t actually direct the film, either. He secured the rights to the book it was based on in 2009, and in 2016, the project was officially announced. Christian Rivers was announced to direct, having previously worked on the visual effects teams for Peter Jackson‘s directed works.
The film, titled Mortal Engines, was Rivers’ directorial debut. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting in which cities have been mounted on wheels and motorized. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the film was a massive flop at the box office despite its ambitious story.
Now, nearly six years later, it appears to have made a comeback on Netflix. As of this writing, Mortal Engines from producer Peter Jackson has broken into the Top 10 category on Netflix. Subscribers are apparently eager to visit this particular story, and it’s quite nice to see that it’s gradually finding an audience. Though it’s unlikely to do as well as Peter Jackson’s other works, it’s a film that still manages to make some people happy.
