The horror genre has proven that many franchises are never truly over. This is now the case with one cult classic horror movie franchise that’s set to be reimagined with an all-new trilogy.
Additionally, the first installment of this new trilogy is expected to start production “in late Summer/Early Fall.” It also looks like the planned revival of this series will span beyond film.
Essentially, this is only the start of many new projects taking place in the world of this iconic franchise. The deal is also expected to include a new book series as well, all of which is set to further flesh out the universe of this brand.
This new era for the franchise, set in the world of Ghoulies, is made possible by the re-acquisition of the rights by original director/co-writer Luca Bercovici and producer/co-writer Jefery Levy. Now they plan to “develop a new film trilogy for a new generation.”
Theo Lemasters wrote the scripts for the three films, and added that they’re “shopping it now and hoping to film in late Summer/Early Fall,” as shared to Bloody-Disgusting. The press release continues:
“Drawing upon their unmatched expertise and unwavering passion, Levy, Bercovici, and Theo Lemasters are set to unveil a series of projects that will keep audiences wallowing in filthy horror fun for many years to come.
“The team is expanding the Ghoulies universe beyond the silver screen with a book series that will plunge readers into the darkest depths of the Ghoulies universe.
“Fans can look forward to bringing home a piece of the Ghoulies universe with an exclusive line of figures, apparel, and collectibles for every devotee of the delightfully demonic Ghoulies.”
In addition to the original film, Ghoulies was followed by Ghoulies II in 1987, a third film titled Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College in 1991, and the final original installment Ghoulies IV in 1994. It’s been a long time for the brand to be dormant, three decades in fact, so it’s about time to see Ghoulies come back in style with a new horror movie trilogy.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the new Ghoulies trilogy as we have them. For now, it’ll be exciting to see what kind of direction the long-dormant franchise will take next.
