Beau DeMayo has been involved with a number of Marvel projects for Disney Plus, including the animated series revival X-Men ’97. In fact, DeMayo is credited as the creator of the series, though he’s now been fired before the premiere of the series has even taken place.
DeMayo’s other credits with the studio include work on Moon Knight and the upcoming feature Blade. As shared via THR, he was even “lining up press” for his work on X-Men ’97 and “making plans to attend the show’s Hollywood premiere on March 13.” DeMayo “was even discussing loose ideas for a third season with members of his team.”
The outlet notes, however, that “Marvel and DeMayo suddenly parted ways” last week. Here’s what the publication shared on that front:
“His company email was deactivated and cast and crew were informed he was no longer on the project. DeMayo’s Instagram account, once a source for X-Men updates, was deleted. No reason for the firing was given.”
At this time neither Marvel nor DeMayo’s representatives have commented on the matter. As such, it’s a rather strange situation. As the publication adds, “it is unusual for a top creative on a Marvel project to miss a premiere or cancel press plans last minute, even if they’ve been shuffled to the side. Most Marvel premieres feature multiple screenwriters walking the red carpet, some of whom had been rewritten by other writers also walking the carpet.”
Hopefully more information will be released in the near future. As for now, it seems like Marvel Studios wants to distance themselves from DeMayo ahead of the release of the series. If that’s the case, then it could be a rather delicate situation for everyone involved as more details come to light.
