The Twilight franchise dominated the beginning years of the 2000’s. The first novel of the same name, written by Stephenie Meyer, was published in 2005. It was followed by three direct sequels in 2006, 2007, and 2008 in addition to a series of film adaptations each year from 2008 to 2012. Now it looks like the Twilight franchise is set for a reboot.
Lionsgate’s plans for the reboot were reportedly to produce a television series based on the property as opposed to another film series. Now a major update has been released by Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate. Burns shared the news while speaking during a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference.
Here’s what Burns shared via CBM:
“We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”
This is certainly a surprising development. Especially for fans that expected another live-action incarnation similar to the original movies. Of course, to justify making a new adaptation at all, it seems as though Lionsgate wants to take the material to a new medium instead. Thus it makes sense that they’d want to go through with an animated adaptation this time around.
Other details for the series are currently being kept under wraps at this time. This includes where the series will be released or when. However, it was shared in 2023 that writer Sinead Daly had been tapped to write for the show. As such, we’ll have to see how this project progresses.
Wyck Godfrey and former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig are both attached as executive producers for the series. Stephenie Meyer is also expected to be involved with the project.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the upcoming Twilight animated series reboot as we have them. For now, it’ll be interesting to see how this new iteration gets off the ground.
