The 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow earned $370.5 million worldwide with a $178 million budget. It continued to earn positive reviews from critics and built a following. Now, about a decade later, it looks like Edge of Tomorrow 2 is being discussed.
Talks of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel can be traced back to 2015. There have been various incarnations of the project since then. Of course, there has never been an official greenlight to go into production. Now, however, it looks like more serious talks have started between Tom Cruise and Warner Bros.
This new development was shared by Variety. The publication notes that this is only one of several discussions being held by Tom Cruise and Warner Bros, as the two have entered a nonexclusive “strategic partnership.”
As such, the project appears to be in the earliest possible stages of development, if at all, and it’s unknown what the storyline of the film will be. Tom Cruise stars in the film as Cage, a soldier that relives the same day over and over again as he fights aliens. However, each time he dies is when the day finally restarts.
It’s an interesting premise and certainly opens up plenty of possibilities for a sequel between the sci-fi and action elements, not to mention the elements in which each day repeats itself. As films like Happy Death Day and its sequel have proven, there’s always room for innovation and a few extra surprises as the stories continue. Hopefully we’ll see that happen again with a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Edge of Tomorrow 2 as we have them. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon as to whether or not the project will be headed into official development or production soon. If nothing else, this deal between Tom Cruise and Warner Bros. should definitely yield some exciting results.
