Many action movies these days tend to be the superhero variety. Over the last ten years, however, plenty of gritty action thrillers have risen to the surface. Now one such action thriller, an underrated release from 2017, is now available for streaming on Netflix.
The streaming service often carries newer films, though the occasional gem from the past has been known to make an appearance. As such, subscribers could definitely do themselves a favor by checking out this particular film. Especially if they like their action dark and gritty.
This particular movie, which also boasts a very impressive cast, was directed by S. Craig Zahler and carries his very unique vision. His works are clearly influenced by the exploitation era from the 1970s and 1980s, and this film definitely delivers those vibes in spades.
The film, titled Brawl in Cell Block 99, stars the likes of Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Don Johnson, Udo Kier, Geno Segers, Marc Blucas, and Tom Guiry. Vaughn plays the lead who, after a brutal shootout with police as a drug courier, winds up in prison.

BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 is on netflix now, and it’s worth your time if you like crime movies/fiction at all. if you’ve heard about craig zahler and worry about it being right-wing, i assure you it’s apolitical. undeniably 70s-style pulp, but with a deep vein of human emotion.

The film takes some impressive, and shocking, twists and turns as Vaughn’s character finds himself in a number of intense situations. As it looks like things couldn’t get any worse, however, they do. The film’s storyline itself appears to have been inspired by the 14th century poem Divine Comedy, in that it mirrors Dante’s odyssey into the ninth circle of hell.
As such, this isn’t exactly the type of action film where you can expect one-liners and a light sense of humor. It’s a brutal, dark, and enthralling thriller, the likes of which are seldom seen these days. So if you’re in the mood for something a little different for your Netflix viewing, definitely check out the action thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99.
