The Marvel Cinematic Universe is largely responsible for making Marvel into a major moneymaking brand. Of course, the recent release of The Marvels gave us the biggest box office bomb from the franchise yet. Now it looks like another Marvel movie is being tracked to bomb at the box office.
Now that Disney has acquired Fox, the Marvel brand is mostly held under Disney’s Marvel Studios and Sony‘s ownership of the Spider-Man rights. Of course, Universal still shares ownership of The Hulk, but it’s between Marvel Studios and Sony that most Marvel adaptations are produced and released.
In Sony’s case, they’ve found themselves producing a number of Spider-Man films and other related media. Now, following their success with spin-offs like Venom, they’ve decided to branch out and create another spin-off that’s already being tracked to bomb.
As noted via Box Office Pro, things aren’t looking good for Sony’s upcoming film Madame Web. The new movie will revolve around the titular character as she comes to terms with her clairvoyant powers. However, it doesn’t look like audiences are very interested in her origin story.
The box office tracking website reveals that the film is currently being tracked to open domestically with $25-$35 million in its opening weekend. If that happens, then Madame Web will actually have the lowest-grossing domestic opening weekend ever for a Sony Spider-Man film. It could also become the lowest-grossing Marvel movie of 2024 if it finishes its domestic run in the $56-$101 million range as tracked.
Of course, it could be on the lower end, similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, given that it’s a new story with new characters. If the film is received well critically, it could bounce back with a sequel and have a larger success at the box office. Otherwise, if it’s like Morbius, then Madame Web could just be a similar failure for Sony and one that might not have any merit for the studio going into the future.
Madame Web is currently scheduled to be released on February 14, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Madame Web and the future of Marvel as we have them. It’s definitely going to be interesting seeing how this Marvel film performs when it does finally hit theaters and whether or not it’ll bomb.
