Many Marvel fans have been hopeful that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man could someday return to the MCU. The fan-favorite character, who helped launch the shared cinematic universe, sacrificed himself during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Now Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has confirmed the fate of Iron Man.
He spoke recently about the character’s fate, and whether or not we could expect him to return at some point in the future. After all, with the popularity of the Multiverse, many fans have questioned if Iron Man could be brought back. Especially after projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home proved it possible.
For Feige, however, it looks like fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. Here’s what he said to Vanity Fair regarding Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man:
“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige began. “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
It’s an understandable response from Feige. After all, Avengers: Endgame is very much a finale to everything that came before it. Although the franchise is still ongoing, there is a clear separation between the original phases and what Marvel Studios has been building since. So while some fans yearn for the presence of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in this new MCU, the character certainly went out on a high note. Marvel Studios is smart, then, not to mess with that.
Of course, Hollywood has certainly taught moviegoers to never say never over the years. As such, we’ll have to see what happens as the franchise continues. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we have them.
For now, it doesn’t look like Robert Downey Jr. has any chance at returning as Iron Man according to Kevin Feige. In the meantime, the MCU has introduced plenty of other superheroes to assist in carrying the brand forward.
