One of the greatest horror offerings of the aughts has been Trick ‘r Treat. The film, which first premiered in 2007 before being widely released in 2009, has become a modern-day classic for Halloween viewings. Now original director Michael Dougherty has given an exciting update regarding Trick ‘r Treat 2.
The development of Trick ‘r Treat 2 has been teased several times over the years. In fact, Michael Dougherty previously teased last year that the film was in “very active development.” Now, Dougherty reveals a script for the sequel has been completed.
Michael Dougherty participated in a Q&A for a screening of Trick ‘r Treat that was held over the weekend. Naturally, the possibility for a sequel was brought up, and Dougherty explained the situation (via Collider) that currently depends on Legendary:
“I will say this, because we said it last year at the Beyond Fest screening, the sequel is in active development with Legendary,” Dougherty confirms.
He then opened up to discuss what this development has so far included:
“I’ll go so far as to say that we have several drafts of a script. I brought back the same storyboard artist I mentioned before, Simeon Wilkins, so we have a stack of storyboards and a good fat stack of concept art done by Breehn Burns as well. So it’s inching along.”
Dougherty adds the following about the “really great script” for Trick ‘r Treat 2:
“I’m hoping to talk to Legendary,” Dougherty adds. “They’ve been wonderful, like great collaborators. But so much of it is timing, and as you know, we just got out of a strike, so the next step, fingers crossed, would be looking at budget, of course, schedule, and all the rest. But we have a really, really great script for a sequel. And I brought in my co-writer from Krampus to do it with me. So Zach Shields and Todd Casey also helped me write Trick ‘r Treat Part 2.”
Trick ‘r Treat has only grown in popularity over the years. The brand, including its mascot Sam, has become an iconic trademark of the holiday every year. As such, it makes sense that they want to approach the sequel as carefully as possible. But if the script they have plotted is as great as they say – then it’s clearly in good hands. Hopefully we’ll have more concrete details in the near future.
