Fans were delighted to see Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear alongside Tom Holland – and their respective villains – in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, that left fans with many questions about other characters from their respective Marvel universes. Now it appears those questions could have bene answered as three legacy characters were actually cut from Spider-Man: No Way Home.
As noted via CBM, the authors of MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, Joanna Robinson Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, had the opportunity to speak with Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The writers were kind enough to discuss which other characters almost appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home. And it would have no doubt been even more exciting.
Here’s what was shared:
“Sommers and McKenna, at various points, wrote versions of the story that incorporated Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May, but ultimately cut all those women when they decided that the story was already overstuffed; the only female characters with significant screen time would be Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May and Zendaya’s MJ.”
They also explained that the screenplay for the film was constantly shifting:
“Because the screenplay was constantly in flux, none of the actors could read a locked script, and they joined the project based on their faith in [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], [Producer Amy Pascal], and director Jon Watts.”
On that note, it’s unknown how exactly their characters could have fit in the film. But if there were branched timelines involved, that could explain how Emma Stone‘s Gwen Stacy would have returned. With the Multiverse still at play, however, it’s likely that we could still see these other characters return in a later Spider-Man project.
