Streaming services have proven to be an unpredictable landscape for entertainment. Now it’s been revealed that a popular Peacock series has been cancelled despite a renewal for a second season.
It hasn’t been surprising to see a streaming platform cancel a series with only one season. It is surprising, however, to see one cancelled with a renewal in place. This cancellation was shared via Deadline, where they revealed that the series Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin will not be “moving forward.”
As noted, “this marks a reversal of the Season 2 renewal for the offshoot from the Pitch Perfect movie franchise, which was announced in early January.”
According to the publication, Peacock appears to have cancelled the series due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The strikes “have delayed production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates,” with two Prime shows mentioned as having similar fates despite their own Season 2 renewals.
The first season for Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin was released as far back as November 2022. Unfortunately, despite the renewal, the studio was unable to begin pre-production on the new season due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. As such, Peacock made the decision to cancel the show altogether, as it would have “fallen significantly behind its planned timeline.” This, Deadline notes, “would impact Peacock’s pipeline as there is already a schedule – and budget – in place for content rollout.”
It’s possible we’ll continue seeing such shows receive cancellations. As always, we’ll have to see what happens next. Hopefully the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes can conclude soon with the desired outcomes, and that this is far from the end of the Pitch Perfect brand for fans of the Universal franchise.
