It’s always a beautiful sight when a horror movie does well enough for a sequel to happen. Especially when the first film is something of a risk for the studio. Paramount Pictures‘ risk paid off when they released Smile, a film intended for streaming, in theaters. Now they’ve announced a release date for Smile 2.
Smile grossed as much as $217 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. As such, it’s easy to see why Paramount was quick to announce a sequel. Now, as shared via Deadline, the sequel will be hitting theaters as soon as next year in 2024.
Here’s the full release date for Smile 2 noted below:
“Paramount has set Oct. 18, 2024 for the next Smile movie.”
The publication adds that original Smile director “Parker Finn is coming back to helm Smile 2.” Unfortunately, other details are unknown at this time, and they note that the cast has yet to be announced “due to the strikes.” Nevertheless, the studio was still eager “to grab” the October release date for the sequel.
There’s certainly something exciting about having Paramount so eager to get a Smile sequel underway. It’s clear that they had a true winner on their hands with the first film, and with the original director returning, they clearly expect the sequel to live up to its predecessor. Though there aren’t many details currently, it’s likely that we’ll have more revealed about the project soon. Especially if they hope to have the sequel finished within the next year.
The original Smile was both written and directed by Parker Finn as his feature directorial debut. It was based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept and starred Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan. Caitlin Stasey also reprised her role from the short film.
