The CW is known for having introduced a number of different superhero television shows to the public. Shockingly, however, The CW has officially cancelled the production of a new superhero series.
Of course, it might not be too shocking, as this particular project has been trouble from the start. It was first announced in 2001 as a live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls. The CW hoped to introduce adult versions of the titular characters in a pilot that would later be reshot. Now the project is being axed altogether, as shared by TVLine.
Here’s what they shared about the series which was titled “Powerpuff“:
“Powerpuff… has powered completely down. Sources confirm for TVLine that the live-action Powerpuff Girls series — which The CW sent back to the studio amid ownership/strategic changes at the netlet — is no longer in development at Warner Bros. TV.”
The original Powerpuff Girls series ran from 1998 to 2005. It was a tremendous success for Cartoon Network and spawned a theatrical film in addition to several different spin-off projects. As such, some fans expected a live-action version to be a surefire win, with others being cautious about the idea.
In any case, it looks like the project just couldn’t take off, as it’s no longer happening. The series initially announced Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Bennet eventually left the project in August 2021.
Of course, there are probably more than a few reasons for why The CW would cancel the series. For starters, the network has been reworking most of their scripted shows, with the channel’s new goal being reality television. This new goal was put into place after the network was sold altogether for not being profitable.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding The CW as we have them. For now, it looks like the Powerpuff Girls will remain animated.
