Amazon Prime is surprising viewers with a brand-new horror series. The series, which is actually inspired by a podcast of the same name, appears to have reached Top 10 spots in 50 different countries. As such, it’s already become Amazon’s seventh top-viewed television series.
This exciting news was shared via FlixPatrol, revealing that The Horror of Dolores Roach has become a massive success for the streaming service. Ultimately, it proves that horror will always find an audience, and The Horror of Dolores Roach most certainly has.
The premise for the series is as follows:
“After an unjust 16-year prison sentence, Dolores Roach returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, ‘Magic Hands’ Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive.”
The series presents a mix of horror and dark humor that likely explains why audiences are so drawn to the new series. Additionally, with its uniquely modern retelling of tropes found in the likes of Sweeney Todd, it isn’t too surprising to see its popularity. It’s a sign that horror will always remain relevant, and that it will always have an audience. Hopefully this means Amazon will continue taking chances with launching new horror shows on their service and that other streaming platforms will likewise follow. Especially seeing as Dolores Roach continues breaking records in so many countries.
The cast of the series includes Justina Machado, Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, K. Todd Freeman, Marc Maron, Judy Reyes, Jean Yoon, Jeffery Self, and Cyndi Lauper.
