Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is receiving a brand-new origin story in the form of Wonka. Wonka, a brand-new movie telling the early life of Willy Wonka, is set to star Timothée Chalamet in the titular role. Now the official trailer for Wonka has been released.
Gene Wilder famously portrayed the character in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. This particular film was a direct adaptation of Dahl’s novel. As such, the new film is intended as a companion piece to both the original novel and its 1971 adaptation. And, as you can see in the new footage below, it seems to do a fantastic job.
Here’s the first official trailer for the upcoming film Wonka:
Timothée Chalamet certainly looks like a great choice for the titular role. As mentioned, the character was previously played by Gene Wilder, while actor Johnny Depp played Wonka in a 2005 adaptation from Tim Burton. Though Wilder’s interpretation is obviously the more iconic and the one that this film will be paying the most attention to. It should be interesting, then, considering this will show how Willy Wonka got his start.
Hopefully more glimpses at the film, and Chalamet’s performance, will be released in the near future. The film is slated to finally be released later this year in December. As such, we’ll have a few more months to go, but this is certainly a pleasant start to the film’s marketing campaign.
The upcoming film Wonka is directed by Paul King, who co-wrote the film with Simon Farnaby.
In addition to Timothée Chalamet, the film also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, and Jim Carter.
Wonka is scheduled to be released on December 15, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated origin story as we have them. For now, however, the first official trailer for Wonka is a great sign for what’s to come.
