The Flash featured plenty of hype (and controversy) on the way to its release. And, despite positive reviews from the likes of James Gunn and Stephen King, The Flash appears to have had a disastrous opening weekend at the box office.
The box office earnings of the film have been reported via Box Office Mojo. According to their records, the film has only made close to $60 million domestically during its opening weekend. In fact, this is less than the opening of Black Adam, another DC superhero film that quickly became a theatrical flop.
It was initially estimated that The Flash would make somewhere between $115 to $140 million during its opening weekend. This number was estimated before the film’s release when it was still being hyped as an incredible superhero film. In fact, quite a few viewers who got to see the film early claimed it was one of the best superhero movies ever made. But clearly this hype was detrimental as the estimates soon dropped to $70 to $75 million following Friday’s box office intake.
Of course, it’s possible that the film could earn more money throughout its run. But word-of-mouth isn’t particularly positive so it’s unlikely to perform anywhere near as well as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. It seems like The Flash will hit somewhere between DC’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Either way, regardless of the box office, The Flash is only one step closer to the all-new DCU. The upcoming shared universe is set to launch with Superman: Legacy and we’ll see if DC can begin making some proper blockbusters again. Otherwise, it certainly isn’t looking good for the current trend of superhero movies.
The DC superhero film The Flash was directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson. The story for the film was penned by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold.
The cast includes Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck.
