Fans have finally seen the long-awaited DC superhero film The Flash. It’s a Multiverse-themed adventure that’s been years in the making. Of course, the ending for The Flash suggests some crazy possibilities for the franchise’s future, and fans may be wondering just what they mean.
For those who’ve seen the film, they know that Barry Allen altered both the present and future as a result of his decisions. This was already evident when Michael Keaton’s Batman showed up to replace the presence of Ben Affleck’s Batman. Well, the ending of The Flash offers yet another version: George Clooney’s Batman.
George Clooney played the iconic superhero in the 1997 film Batman & Robin. The film, a loose follow-up to Batman Forever (itself a loose follow-up to Michael Keaton’s Batman and Batman Returns), happened to be the only iteration where Clooney played the character. The film was critically panned by audiences and critics and it wasn’t long before Batman Begins took the character in a new direction.
As such, because Barry Allen chose to yet again change time by rearranging the tomato cans in an effort to save his father, Ben Affleck’s Batman is no more. It’s possible that he could always go back, once again put the tomato cans in their original position, and then bring back Affleck’s Batman. But the post-credits scene confirms he has yet to do so.
In the film’s only post-credits scene, he talks with a drunk Aquaman played by Jason Momoa. Apparently his character has no memory of Affleck’s Batman. And, as a result, Barry is the only one who knows about the past. But it’s possible that the timelines could change yet again. Especially as James Gunn’s DCU is being prepared to reshape the franchise.
The DC superhero film The Flash was directed by Andy Muschietti from a screenplay written by Christina Hodson. The story for the film was penned by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, and Joby Harold.
The cast includes Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck.
