As of last year, everybody’s favorite wall crawler has been brought home to Marvel Studios but now, In a major case of What could have been, we have been given our first look at Sam Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4. That’s right, even after the disappointing reception the third film received a fourth film was planned, that’s what $890 Million at the box office will do for you.
Before Sony rebooted the character in The Amazing Spider-Man, they were moving full steam ahead with the fourth film in the franchise which would have seen Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) battling The Vulture (John Malcovich) and Felicia Hardy (Anne Hathaway), who in this instance was going to be a villain known as The Vulturess. Unfortunately due to the many issues which had arisen over the film’s development, most notably with Raimi’s dislike of the film’s story, the film was cancelled in 2010 in favor of a reboot.
Now thanks to a Reddit user, we have a glimpse of how it could have been in the form of concept art. The artwork gives us a look at Spider-Man swinging into action as-well as The Vulture on the run from the police. The art also reveals that long term Spidey foe, Mysterio, would have been making an appearance in the film.
The concept art for this character actually looks suspiciously like Raimi’s good friend and go-to actor, Bruce Campbell. Could this have meant that actor was due for a bigger role than the smallĀ cameosĀ in previous films. The final piece looks to be Felicia Hardy in a busy street, although what’s actually happening in the scene isn’t clear.
While it’s probably better that we have Spidey back home in the MCU, especially after seeing how well he was portrayed by Tom Holland in Captain America: Civil War, it’s definitely interesting to see just how different things could be. Perhaps in some alternate universe our Blu-Ray collections include Spider-Man 4 and maybe even 5 and 6 aswell. At least we can check the character out again in Spider-Man: Homecoming when it hits screens July 7th 2017.
