Alright, so the internet is going crazy over Captain America swearing his allegiance to Hydra. Not just any Captain America, but Steve Rogers, the original Captain America. In Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz’s new title, Captain America: Steve Rogers #1, Rogers pushes his sidekick, Jack Flag, out a helicopter and utters “Hail Hydra.”
Everyone from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, Captain America actor Chris Evans, Cap’s biggest fan Phil Coulson, to even Stan “the man” Lee have weighed in on this revelation. It was only a matter of time before the studio-merc with a mouth, Kevin Smith, put in his two cents:
Current #CaptainAmerica story could be fun but won’t be canon change, because THIS guy could never be a Hydra agent: https://t.co/jGov7JQmZZ

I agree with Smith that this will be a fun story. But is it canon, or not? How far do you think this title will go before some other twist comes along to rectify it? Or will this be a stand-alone story, like Smith suggests, that will not connect with the rest of the 616 universe?
Batman may be his favorite superhero, yet he has a soft spot for the Cap-man as well. In his podcast, Fatman of Batman, where he speaks with all sorts of folks in the comic book world, he sat down with Marvel Chief Creative Officer, Joe Quesada, to talk Captain America: The Winter Soldier, upon its release. The hour or so was nothing but praise for the movie, its hero, and the publisher who has breathed life into Cap and his pals. So it comes as no surprise that he uses a scene from Captain America: The First Avenger to defend his argument.
Hydra is all about betrayal and selfishness in order to rise to power – much like the Sith. Where does a man who muffles a grenade with his body, pre-Super Soldier Serum, to protect fellow soldiers who wouldn’t do the same? The perfect Hydra agent, that’s who. All this just tells me that Cap used an Oscar-worthy portrayal to fool everyone that he was far from the mentality that would cut one head off to grow two more. There- I said it.
Spencer and Saiz had some balls to do what they did. And I say “kudos.” Now lets see what they’ll do with it.
