The streaming service Disney Plus has allowed for many opportunities that were previously unavailable to fans. This includes both movies and shows that acted as long-awaited follow-ups to some of Disney’s cult classics. Sadly, it looks like one major Disney Plus series has been officially cancelled by the service.
This news comes via Deadline. As such, quite a few fans of this classic 1988 fantasy film are sure to be disappointed. Especially just because it took so long to get any kind of follow-up in the first place.
Here’s how they noted that Disney Plus cancelled their hit series:
“There will be no second season of Willow, Disney+’s live-action original series based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard. The news comes two months after the eight-episode first season of the show, which served as a sequel to the classic movie, ended its run on the streaming platform.”
Fans will recall that the Willow Disney Plus series was in development for quite a few years before its premiere. In fact, discussions regarding the project began to surface around the same time that Disney Plus launched in 2019. It wasn’t long after that the series was finally ordered in 2020. Now, however, with eight episodes having been released – the news is out. There will not be a second season of Willow.
Of course, Lucasfilm and Disney could always revisit the property in some other shape or form in the future. As always, we’ll just have to see what happens. Especially in the consistently-changing world of streaming. There are numerous possibilities to explore or reassess.
In addition to returning Willow star Warwick Davis, the series also starred Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amar Chadha-Patel, Dempsey Bryk, and Joanne Whalley.
The first season of Willow is currently available to stream via Disney Plus. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Disney Plus updates as we have them.
