Henry Cavill was expected to have at least one more appearance as Superman following his cameo in Black Adam. It wasn’t long after, however, that Cavill was officially confirmed to have exited the role. Rather, James Gunn and the rest of DC Studios found it best to introduce a new version of the character. Now James Gunn confirms that he started work on the next Superman movie before Henry Cavill returned for Black Adam.
The next Superman movie, titled Superman: Legacy, is supposed to usher in a new cinematic universe. This includes a number of other announced projects such as Creature Commandos. James Gunn was asked about this project where he elaborated on his involvement with that and Superman: Legacy. As he explains, they weren’t “THAT fast-tracked.”
Specifically, it appears that Superman: Legacy was in development alongside a potential Man of Steel 2. However, Superman: Legacy was the project that won out in the end. James Gunn also mentioned that he was hired to write Superman: Legacy over six months ago – which means he began working on the film before Henry Cavill’s Black Adam cameo.
Superman Legacy was always a separate project.

It was. I was hired to write Superman Legacy over six months ago.

Of course, there’s still confusion as to why Henry Cavill had the Black Adam cameo at all. Especially if they knew there was another project in the works – one that wouldn’t involve Cavill. But some reports stated that actor Dwayne Johnson went behind Warner Bros executives to get Cavill back as Superman. As such, that would explain the lack of planning and abrupt changes across the board.
Hopefully now that Warner Bros Discovery is taking their newly-announced DCU in a different direction, we’ll have less of these issues in the future. And, of course, one can only hope that we’ll receive films and shows with the highest possible quality as a result. We’ll have to see what happens when James Gunn finishes his work with the next Superman movie. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
