Netflix has become quite well-known for making upsetting announcements. Especially when it comes to cancellations of highly-anticipated or fan-favorite projects. Now the latest Netflix cancellation has one particularly major music fanbase upset.
As of late, many streaming services have been making cancellations left and right. Netflix is one such example, with little-to-no explanations often given as to why. Now, as shared via Stereogum, this latest report is sure to make heads spin.
They brought up that Gorillaz creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have been adamant about trying to get a Gorillaz movie made with Netflix. As it turns out, the movie was actually very close to happening at the streaming service. At least, that’s until Netflix decided to dismantle most of its animation division. Albarn revealed as much in a translated interview with HUMO, where he stated the following:
“The new record came about because Jamie and I were often in Los Angeles. We were working on a Gorillaz feature film, which will never happen.”
He was asked to elaborate whether or not the film was “permanently suspended.” Here’s his answer:
“Yes. That is to say, and without naming names because the whole matter has not yet been settled: the streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn. They started to panic because they were making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings. And, as has been classic Hollywood practice for decades, the guy we were working with has moved on to another company. From then on you have lost your guardian angel, and there seems to be a bad smell hanging on you. Hollywood is quite territorial: if a new guy comes along, he must and will have a different opinion, even if he secretly agrees with his predecessor.”
This is certainly disappointing. Many music fans have expressed their disappointment with Netflix on social media:

You know I realize that Netflix and Warner Brothers discovery are two entirely different companies, but seeing another commercial for power slap and being reminded that a gorillaz movie got canceled today is infuriating

It’s a special kind of disappointment to find out they were making a Gorillaz movie via an article saying it was canceled. Hopefully someone else picks it up.

Only Netflix could fuck over the possibility of a Gorillaz movie FINALLY getting made.
“They started to panic because they were making too much content”
Netflix, to this day, has a new movie, special, or show release every month. They STILL are making a lot of content. https://t.co/N9EdX1yQ0f

It’s unfortunate because streaming seemed to allow so many possibilities to come to fruition. Now, however, with so many competitors and budget cuts to be made – it seems that more and more projects are being discarded.
