Fans have been eager to see how Disney would approach a live-action movie adaptation of Lilo & Stitch. Now, following the announcement from several years ago, the project is finally moving ahead. And, surprisingly enough, actor Zach Galifianakis is set to star in the Lilo & Stitch adaptation.
This news comes via THR which also noted that Dean Fleischer Camp is attached as the film’s director. Camp previously directed the best animated Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. As such, fans should have an interesting project to look forward to.
Of course, at this stage of development, it’s unknown exactly what role Zach Galifianakis could play in the Lilo & Stitch film. Though it appears that the studio is currently looking for actors to play Lilo and her older sister. Stitch, obviously, will be portrayed via CGI.
The screenplay for the film was penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback will produce the film while Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce.
Here’s a summary of the original film from Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois who wrote and directed the cult classic:
“The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bonded over a shared sense of family and win the day.”
The Lilo & Stitch live-action film is expected to be released on Disney Plus. A release date for the film has yet to be revealed.
