There are plenty of dormant horror franchises from the 1980s and 1990s. Now it appears that one such franchise – the House series, to be exact – is being rebooted with an all-new film.
The original set of House films included four different movies. The original 1986 film, a stand-alone 1987 sequel, a separate 1989 film titled The Horror Show which was retitled House III: The Horror Show, and a 1992 direct sequel to the original film titled House IV: The Repossession.
Of course, despite the dormancy of the franchise, the House name has remained popular with horror fans. This is largely due in part to the lasting appeal of the original film. Fans love the wacky practical effects and quirky humor that the original House had to offer. As such, writer Jeff Locker teases that several of its iconic monsters will be returning for a new House film.
He revealed as much in an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, explaining that he and director Jeremy Weiss are working with House producer Sean Cunningham on the project:
“The House reboot is both an update and reimagining of the classic series, centering around the birth of a haunted house,” Locker explains. “Lots of great scares and howl-at-the-screen laughs, plus we’re bringing back a few of your favorite monsters from the original for some really fun but equally terrifying kills.”
Additionally, he teased just how much fun it is to write this new House film.
“I’m working on the script as we speak and all I can say is I’m having a fucking BLAST!”
What’s more, the interview notes that there is an “accompanying video game concept” to go along with the project. However, details for that project are scarce. Producer Sean Cunningham was previously involved with Friday the 13th: The Game. So that may illustrate how the House brand could be adapted for the video game market.
In any case, it’s exciting to see another classic horror franchise revived. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on this new potential House film as we have them. For now, here’s a glimpse at some early artwork for the project:
