As the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands, they’re still introducing numerous beloved characters from the comics. Now a Marvel Studios executive has teased one such character he’d love to see in the MCU – and he happens to be something of a black Superman.
Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Nate Moore recently spoke with Deadline’s Crew Call podcast. While there, he took the opportunity to discuss which Marvel character he’d love to see arrive in the MCU.
Interestingly, he chose Blue Marvel, a character that’s very similar to Superman. However, Moore notes just how he would love to see this black Superman-like character used in the MCU:
“And then there’s a fantastic character who’s relatively recent in Marvel, named the Blue Marvel, who is fascinating. So, he’s a character who is almost Superman in strength and powers, who in the ’60s, operated as a Blue Marvel masked character.”
He further discussed some of the unique opportunities that could come into play by setting Blue Marvel’s story in the Civil Rights era:
“But, in a fight, his mask is ripped off and people realize he’s Black. And [John F.] Kennedy actually asks him to go back undercover because he’s scaring people, ’cause he’s gonna upset the powder keg of the Civil Rights era. And he’s since been reintroduced into… Marvel publishing as a really smart, almost Captain Nemo character. Like he takes great space voyages and he goes on these grand adventures. But he’s a great character. But there’s so many. I mean, there really are a lot. There’s a lot of exciting stuff that’s gonna come.”
Interestingly, Warner Bros and DC are currently developing an actual black Superman project. It would certainly be interesting timing if Marvel got their own off the ground. Of course, we’ll just have to see what happens in the future.
For now, however, with a Marvel Studios executive interested in adapting Blue Marvel – it certainly seems more likely than not that we’ll be seeing him in the MCU. It’s only a matter of time.
