Many streaming services have been making tough decisions when it comes to renewing television shows. Unfortunately, that means yet another Netflix series has been cancelled with only one season.
There are numerous factors that convince Netflix to cancel or renew a series. Unfortunately, viewers only know a few of those factors. So, despite the series having a solid reception, it appears to have been canned nevertheless.
The series happened to be a new science-fiction mystery thriller series. As such, fans were excited by the unique setup of the show. But, as confirmed by series creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, there will not be any additional seasons released.
They confirmed as much on Instagram with the following Instagram post:
“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” the statement begins.
The creators of 1899 then continue to say they would’ve loved finishing the story with an additional two seasons. However, they note that “sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”
“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.

It’s unclear why this decision was made. Some might assume it had something to do with the show’s ratings. Rather, however, Goethe-Institut notes that 1899 is the most expensive German made television series of all time. As such, the costs to produce the series might have been too much. Though given Netflix’s recent track history – they might’ve simply wanted to cancel the series themselves.
So, while the series is cancelled, fans will have to see what creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar do next – and whether or not it’ll be with Netflix.
