James Wan surprised audiences with Malignant. Fans thought the film would launch a brand-new franchise in the same way as Insidious or The Conjuring. Unfortunately, James Wan has delivered a disappointing update regarding the potential Malignant sequel.
The news features both negatives and positives for fans of Malignant, as James Wan explained to ScreenRant. One such positive is that he’s still working with Malignant screenwriter Akela Cooper.
Here’s what he had to say about the Malignant sequel update:
“Let me just say we have a lot of stuff going on right now. Malignant 2 is not necessarily at the top,” he began. “But we’re definitely keeping Akela very busy, I can tell you that.”
Although it seems like Malignant 2 is off the table, it’s worth noting that’s not exactly what James Wan is saying. He only mentions that the film is not at the top of their priorities. So perhaps it could still happen at some point.
Until then, however, it looks like James Wan still has plenty of projects in the works with Akela Cooper. For example, they collaborated on the upcoming film M3GAN that has horror fans around the world excited. It’ll be available for fans to see in theaters on January 6, 2023. Hopefully after that we’ll still get some more great projects from the two – even if they aren’t yet Malignant 2.
James Wan directed the original Malignant from a screenplay penned by Akela Cooper. The story was created by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Akela Cooper. The film starred Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Briana White, and Jacqueline McKenzie.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding upcoming projects from both James Wan and Akela Cooper as we have them. For now, it looks like Malignant 2 isn’t a priority, but at least fans can still enjoy the wackiness of the first film.
