Actor Hugh Jackman will soon be returning to his iconic role as Wolverine in the upcoming film Deadpool 3. For now, however, Hugh Jackman has emphasized his desire to have more gender-neutral acting award categories.
Specifically, and as noted in an interview with the BBC, he believes that there should be “one gender neutral acting category in which all performers compete.” This would allow both male and female acting award categories to function as one single award category.
He believes that it “would be a really positive step” as noted below:
“That would be a really positive step. I don’t understand why it’s split into just two genders when we all know it’s a much bigger spectrum.”
Humorously, however, Jackman notes that he “might have just shot myself in the foot.” Because, if there were one gender-neutral acting award category, then Hugh Jackman’s chances of winning would be cut in half.
“Whatever the mix is, we should maybe just break down any of those categories that end up being divisive and unnecessary.”
Many award ceremonies, including the Gotham Awards, have started to include gender-neutral awards. With that said, the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys, have so far all included the traditional separate male and female categories. But as times and public opinions continue to change, it’s possible that they could also introduce a gender-neutral award. Especially if more celebrities like Hugh Jackman begin to speak up.
In the meantime, fans can also look forward to supporting Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3 where he’ll be teaming up as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds’ titular character. In the same interview, Jackman also spoke about that role:
“I’m always looking for things that I haven’t done before, that challenge me, that scare me. And by the way, when I did Wolverine, it always scared me, too. That’s a million miles away from who I am as well.”
As far as the acting award ceremonies are concerned, we’ll just have to wait and see how these ceremonies continue to adapt in the coming years.
