Fans are excited to learn more about the upcoming films Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Now the villain for Avengers: Secret Wars may have just been revealed in Marvel’s latest announcement.
Fans were already expecting the titular Kang the Conqueror to be the villain of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. As such, many expected his role would carry into Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, according to the Marvel announcement, it appears that an additional villain might be joining that particular film.
The new announcement includes the reveal of Avengers Beyond, a new comic book event. Fans familiar with the original Secret Wars comic event will be recognize the title’s importance. It’s a reference to Beyonder, the villain of the original Secret Wars arc.
As teased in the following logline, “the Avengers will finally realize the shocking truth behind their latest, action-packed adventures when they confront the one and only Beyonder.” Additionally, they noted the following about the villain’s new goals, claiming that “the omnipotent orchestrator behind the groundbreaking original SECRET WARS returns with a vengeance and hatches his latest twisted scheme for the Marvel Universe!”
As for the titular Avengers, their position seems to be very troubling:
“Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have realized something or someone has been influencing them for the past several months, altering the very fabric of reality in an attempt to prepare the planet for a threat that could destroy everything. Here, now, this unseen individual is to be dragged, kicking and screaming, from the shadows and into the light—and is revealed as the Beyonder! Something big is coming to the Marvel Universe…”
The story will be handled by none other than Derek Landy and Greg Land. But how does it fit in with the MCU? Well, let’s take a look at Beyonder.
The character is introduced as a member of near-omnipotent beings called Beyonders. They exist outside of the Multiverse, with the Beyonder initially unaware of his race having other members. He becomes aware of the Marvel Universe after Molecule Man accidentally opens up a hole to Beyonder’s reality. And, as a result, he began to observe Earth.
This leads to the first Secret Wars event. He places both Marvel’s heroes and villains in a giant place called Battleworld. However, in Secret Wars II, he makes a physical effort to infiltrate Earth. And in the 2015 Secret Wars event – all of the Beyonders were the focus. Ultimately, however, Doctor Doom manages to steal all of their power so that he can keep existence from being erased. This is a callback to the original Secret Wars event where he briefly stole power from Beyonder.
As such, it’s possible that Beyonder could be introduced as a villain in Avengers: Secret Wars. Whether or not he’s the main villain in place of Kang the Conqueror, however, will remain to be seen. But it would certainly make sense to introduce him for more potential stories in the future. Especially if they’re trying to reintroduce him in the comics. Furthermore, it could even pave the way for Doctor Doom’s own appearance if they wanted to make the storyline comic-accurate. We’ll just have to see how everything continues to develop.
Michael Waldron is currently penning the screenplay for Avengers: Secret Wars. A director for the film has yet to be attached.
