The Netflix series Squid Game has become one of the most popular titles to ever hit the streaming service. Additionally, 78-year-old actor O Yeong-su even won a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the series. However, the Squid Game star has now been indicted on charges of sexual misconduct. The charges follow accusations that he touched a woman’s body five years ago. He has since continued to deny the allegations.
The case was actually closed earlier this year by authorities. However, the accuser has since appealed their decision to have the case closed. As such, O Yeong-su has once again been detained for questioning. While he admits to having “held her hand,” as noted in a report with JTBC via Variety, he still does not admit to the charges.
Here’s what the Squid Game star had to say about the sexual misconduct charges:
“I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake. I apologized because [the person] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges.”
Additionally, the AFP news agency quoted a Suwon court official who stated that “everything reported by local media is not factually correct.” It was further noted by this agency, via Variety, “that the Korean ministry of culture pulled a government TV commercial about regulatory innovation featuring Oh off the air following the indictment.” As of this writing, Netflix has not released a comment on the matter.
In the television series Squid Game, O Yeong-su was known for playing the oldest participant in the competition. The titular competition includes 456 players that each participate in an effort to escape their debt. However, the competition forces them to play lethal variations of children’s games to try and win the 45.6 billion Won prize. As mentioned above, the series became one of the most popular Netflix titles ever, and there is currently a second season and a real-life interpretation in the works.
