Amber Heard was notably the focus of public harassment following her defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp. The trial occurred after Depp sued Heard for $50 million over an op-ed she wrote in 2018. She counter-sued Depp for $50 million as well. However, by the end of the trial, she was awarded only $2 million while Depp earned $15 million (which had a limit up to $10.35 million.) And thus the reason why Amber Heard became the aforementioned focus of harassment. But now an open letter has been supported by more than 130 organizations in an effort to stop the online harassment against Amber Heard.
A few of the organizations which signed the open letter in support of Amber Heard include Equality Now and The National Women’s Law Center. A number of individuals also signed including activist Gloria Steinem and filmmaker Amy Ziering. Additionally, the letter claims that the harassment against Heard was “fueled by disinformation, misogyny, biphobia, and a monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment.” A press release for the letter specifically states that they want to end the “monetized social media environment where a woman’s allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault were mocked for entertainment.”
Amber Heard has recently made multiple efforts to appeal the verdict made against her. In fact, Amber Heard even tried having the case thrown out entirely given that one of the jurors was not who they were supposed to be. Nevertheless, it’s become increasingly difficult for Amber Heard to try and bring the case into her favor. But this is one of the first major signs of support she’s had since the trial ended – so perhaps we’ll see other such developments in the near future.
In the meantime, Johnny Depp has gradually made his way back into the spotlight. With new commercial deals, musical tours, and film appearances on the way – he’s certainly done his best to clear his name. So whether or not he continues to have such success, we’ll just have to wait and see. It doesn’t look like the allegations between the two celebrities will be ending any time soon.
