With the overhaul at Warner Bros Discovery, including the departure of DC Films president Walter Hamada, fans have been anxious to see where the DCEU is headed. The film franchise has been through quite a few different iterations in recent years. The most recent iteration, however, gave us such hits as The Suicide Squad and the television series Peacemaker from filmmaker James Gunn. Now a new report suggests that James Gunn is developing a secret new DC movie with Warner Bros Discovery.
The news comes in a report via THR. Unfortunately, given the secret nature of the project, there aren’t many details available at the moment. It’s only been stated that “Gunn and producer Peter Safran are in talks with Warners for a mystery movie, possibly more, that Gunn would tackle.” As such, it sounds like James Gunn will continued to be involved with DC’s film slate for quite some time.
In fact, it’s been stated that Gunn “would focus on a second season of Peacemaker first.” This means fans of the hit HBO Max series starring John Cena won’t have anything to worry about. Of course, it’s hard not to wonder which superhero or superhero team could be in the mix for this secret project.
James Gunn has previously iterated that his favorite superheroes to tackle are those that are underrated or obscure. This is especially evident with his past projects. For example, the Guardians of the Galaxy were a rather unknown superhero team from Marvel until Gunn reinvented them for the MCU. And while the Suicide Squad is often a popular lineup for DC, James Gunn chose to fill their roster with lesser known characters like Peacemaker and Polka-Dot Man. One can only imagine what characters he might have in mind for his next original DC project.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates as we have them. The DCEU is clearly moving in both new and major directions – so we should have plenty of exciting news in the near future.
