It’s sadly been announced that actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for his work as Hagrid in the Harry Potter film franchise, has died at age 72. Although no cause of death has been given, it’s been stated that he died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland.
This news, as noted via BBC, was confirmed by his agent Belinda Wright. She shared the following statement after calling Robbie Coltrane a “unique talent.” In addition, she noted how much his role in the Harry Potter film franchise meant to the world, stating that he “Brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world.”
Here’s what her complete statement included:
“For me personally I shall remember him as an abidingly loyal client. As well as being a wonderful actor, he was forensically intelligent, brilliantly witty and after 40 years of being proud to be called his agent, I shall miss him.
“He is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell. They would like to thank the medical staff at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care and diplomacy.”
She further urged fans to respect the privacy of his family “at this distressing time.”
“Please respect Robbie’s family’s privacy at this distressing time.”
It’s worth noting that in 2006, Robbie Coltrane was made an OBE in the New Year’s honours list for his services to drama. Furthermore, the extremely beloved actor was awarded with the Bafta Scotland Award for outstanding contribution to film in 2011. As such, it’s great to see how much support Coltrane received throughout his tremendous career.
A few of his other film appearances include GoldenEye, Van Helsing, and the 2012 Pixar animated film Brave. His last film appearance was in the 2014 motion picture Effie Gray. On the television side of things, he last appeared as Orson Welles in the series Urban Myths before appearing for the 2022 HBO Max Special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. A few other highlights of his career include Cracker, the Channel 4 drama National Treasure, and BBC Scotland’s Tutti Frutti. And, in the 1991 film The Pope Must Die, he played the titular character, the Pope.
As noted above, he’s survived by his sister Annie Rae, children Spencer and Alice, and their mother Rhona Gemmell.
