The American Pie film franchise, which began with the 1999 Universal film American Pie, is soon to receive another installment. This new film, being described as “a fresh take,” is currently being penned by filmmaker Sujata Day.
As revealed via THR, Sujata Day “is set to develop and write a new installment of the long-running sex comedy franchise for Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.” As of this writing, however, they noted that “plot details have yet to be revealed.” Though they did mention that “the story is based on her original pitch” and that it will be “a fresh take.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this new project develops. After all, fans of the franchise are more than familiar with the numerous films under the American Pie banner. This includes three direct sequels to the original film, and another additional five films released under the “American Pie Presents” umbrella. While some of these films have been better received than others, there’s clearly an audience for this franchise, so hopefully this new installment delivers something that everyone can enjoy.
Sujata Day is known for having a rather varied career. She’s worked as an actress with roles on such projects as HBO’s Insecure and the webseries The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. Meanwhile, she had her directorial debut with Definition Please. a film in which she also starred. Sujata Day also previously directed the YouTube series This Is My Story which was narrated by LeVar Burton. In addition, she’s known to have served as a Sundance Lab fellow, Sundance Film Festival influencer, and a HBO Visionaries ambassador.
With such accolades as these, and a multitude of talents, it’s certainly exciting to see Sujata Day involved with the American Pie franchise. Hopefully we’ll have more details with her “fresh take” on the property in the near future. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
