With all his commentary on pop culture nowadays, it’s easy to get annoyed by once indie filmmaker, Kevin Smith. One may think that he gave up his director’s chair to become just a mouthpiece on his podcasts. But rest assured, he’s still doing that thing we love him for. You can catch the trailer for his newest movie, Yoga Hosers, which stars his and Johnny Depp’s daughter. The proud fathers also make appearances, along with Justin Long and Stan Lee.

He’s hard at work on Yoga Hoser‘s follow-up, Moose Jaws, which is actually the third part in a trilogy that was started by Tusk, that starred Justin Long. For the record, though, I looked him up on IMDB, and his character in Yoga Hosers is not a reprisal of his Tusk character. There is also talk of Mallrats and Clerks sequels; but who knows when we’ll see them.
Fans of The Flash will know that he directed the most recent episode, “The Runaway Dinosaur.” In such, you’ll even see a cameo by his hetero-life-mate, the Jay to his Silent Bob, Jason Mewes. Though, his most important talent, in my opinion, did not come into play– that talent that unfortunately turned him into that “mouthpiece.” Injecting his thoughts on nerdism in films such Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, allowed him to eventually land the gig as comic book writer. He has penned works for both Marvel and DC, as well as Oni Press and Dynamite. For Marvel, he did Spider-Man and Black Cat and Daredevil. And for DC, he’s written a couple Batman stories, as well as Green Arrow. It was his work with DC, and his love for Batman, that led him to his podcast, Fatman on Batman.
But that work he did for their comics also eventually led him to direct The Flash. “The Runaway Dinosaur,” was his first episode, but it won’t be the last. He’s set to direct another episode in the first half of Season 3. And while he prefers just directing this stellar show, expressing that he enjoys his collaboration with writer Zack Stentz, he told Variety that he would love to actually write a few episodes for Arrow.
“I would love to jump in for a one or two episode arc just to bring that Onomatopoeia character to life. That would be so badass – I created this character in the comics and then to do a live-action version of it that fit into their universe, fit into the run of their show? That would be exciting to me.”
Arrow showrunners had attempted to bring Onomatopoeia to life back in season one. Though, they said that the concept was too complicated, so they came up with Mr. Blank instead. Mr. Blank was played by J. August Richards, who Marvel fans will know as Deathlok on Agents of SHIELD. He was also on Joss Whedon’s other brainchild, Angel.
Onomatopoeia was a villain that Smith created for his Green Arrow stories “Quiver” and “The Sounds of Violence.” He then reprised him for his Batman story, “Cacophony.” While wearing all black, except for the rippling white circles on his mask, the rogue only speaks in onomatopoeias; words describing sounds. I’m not sure how that could be too complicated for television. But if anyone should bring him to life, it should be the man who created him.
