While an iteration of King Kong has been appearing throughout the MonsterVerse alongside the likes of Godzilla, it looks like a new iteration is also on the way. Furthermore, it looks like this new King Kong project will be taking closer inspiration from its source material. And, better yet, this will be the first live-action King Kong series – headed directly for Disney Plus.
This announcement was made via Deadline, where they also revealed that the King Kong series will be written by Stephany Folsom. They also noted that “deals have just closed for the project, from James Wan’s Atomic Monster, which would mark the first live-action series set in the Kong universe.”
Obviously, there are plenty of possibilities when it comes to a live-action King Kong series. According to the announcement, however, this Disney Plus King Kong series will be “a serialized action-adventure drama that brings the classic monster story into the modern age, with a return to Skull Island and the dawn of a new Kong.” It’s also been stated that the show “will explore the mythology of King Kong’s origin story and the supernatural mysteries of his home.” This mythology is closely based on “Merian C. Cooper’s original books and the new King Kong novelizations by Joe DeVito.”
In addition to writing, Stephany Folsom will executive produce alongside Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett. World Builder Entertainment’s Dannie Festa and Marc Manus also executive produce.
Hopefully we’ll have more details regarding this King Kong project for Disney Plus in the near future. King Kong is one of the most iconic movie monsters ever, and there seems to always be room for another adaptation of his memorable story. While it’s been nice having a version of the monster that could fight alongside Godzilla and other such creatures – this will be a nice change of pace as well to go back to basics. Furthermore, with television as the story’s medium, it will open up new possibilities that fans have never before seen.
