Despite the misstep that was Morbius, Sony is still eagerly expanding their own unique franchise of Marvel films. Aside from Venom 3 and their take on Kraven the Hunter, the studio also has a Madame Web project in the works. In fact, this film has been moving along quite nicely, and it’s just been revealed that Emma Roberts has joined the cast of Madame Web.
This information comes via Deadline, and unfortunately, Sony had no comment as of this writing. As such, it’s still unknown which character Emma Roberts has been attached to play. But given her past performances in both television and film, it will certainly be a highlight of the movie. Hopefully we’ll have more details on that front soon.
As for the film’s setup, it will be an origin story for the titular character.
“The film will be an origin story of the clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world.”
This is certainly an exciting story concept with plenty of possibilities. While we’ve already seen the Multiverse explored in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, not to mention its upcoming sequels, as well as the incredibly-successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, Madame Web could bring a whole new layer to the concept. After all, her clairvoyant character has been a key component for many Spider-Verse styled stories in the past from both comics and animated shows. It’ll be exciting then to see how that transfers over in live-action.
The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Kerem Sanga wrote an earlier draft of the script.
In addition to the newly-announced Emma Roberts, the cast of Madame Web also includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim. Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional cast updates as we have them. At this rate, it’ll be exciting to see who else could be added to the growing ensemble.
Fans will be able to see Madame Web when it hits theaters next year on July 7, 2023.
