There were quite a few trailers released recently. We decided to rummage through the pile and select a few that you might want to check out. Here they are:
X-Men: Apocalypse (Final Trailer)
So, Fox has released the final, final trailer to their comic book franchise. In it, we get more of the action and better shots of the character. Along with more effects integrated in the trailer, we now know a bit more of the scope of the film. It took this many trailers to make me even mildly interested. I’m glad they finally decided to bring out one of the X-Men’s most dangerous, if not the most dangerous, villain they’ve ever encountered. Singer is taking the roster of mutants to familiar territory with the inclusion of Jean, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Storm (even though she’s on the opposing side). It is nice that they brought in a fan favorite like Psylocke and reintroduced Angel. Fox will probably have another hit on their hands, but something tells me this won’t bring in that high of an overall gross when it comes to ticket sales like the previous X-Men film. I’m looking at you, Deadpool. You’ve earned it.
Batman: The Killing Joke
DC Animation decided to go into the R-rated market with Alan Moore’s one-shot comic, The Killing Joke. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill dusted off their classic voice acting skills for this story between Batman and The Joker. In this tale, Batman and Commissioner Gordon are pushed to the limit when The Joker sets his sights on Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl. The animation actually looks kind of cheap and stilted. I know it’s directed by Sam Liu who recently did Justice League vs. Teen Titans, but the animation looks like a rush job and probably should’ve been given more time. I loved this storyline as it gave us a possible origin story for the Joker while still keeping the character mysterious. We’ll just have to see when movie is released.
Cell
It’s time for another one of Stephen King’s novels to be turned into a feature film, and the studios have decided to pick Cell. John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson have teamed up again for this survival horror where the world has gone mad because of cellphones. At first, I thought it was a direct release to DVD because of the look of the film, but I was wrong. The acting looks fun and enjoyable, but the direction looks off. Still, it’s written by Stephen King and that man knows what he’s doing when it comes to script writing, right?
Snowden
We’ve all seen Edward Snowden’s story in the news. The controversies that ensued after he leaked information the CIA was keeping secret were polarizing. With that being said, I was actually glad there is a movie coming out about this recent piece of history. It’s important. I watched the trailer and now I am not so sure I’m glad.
Snowden seems like it would be a great political thriller, as long as you don’t care about the reality behind the story. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Snowden and it’s pretty believable, right down to how nerdy he looks. However, not far into the clip, I started to notice how the story seems to follow Snowden almost exclusively. Yes, the movie borrows his name, but I’m not so sure Snowden was made without bias. Being that it is directed by Oliver Stone and he is known to hold some controversial political views, I am not entirely surprised by this. Hoping to glean new information from the film, I’m sure I’ll make my way to see it when it’s released. – Kelsey Mejiarodarte
Approaching the Unknown
The writer of this film, Mark Elijah Rosenberg, is “approaching the unknown” being that this is his first credited piece. I do know at least one thing after seeing the trailer for this film. I am intrigued.
The clip shows the launch of a spacecraft and goes into the story of Captain William D. Stanaforth (Strong). He is on a mission to live away from Earth. It’s a very brave and exciting prospect. He gets into a routine and starts realizing that there is maybe an issue with variety of things to do with so much time on his hands. Even the fact that the sun only shines through the window once a week is a dreary thought. And it gets worse. His mission seems to be failing as his craft isn’t navigating or giving him pertinent travel information. As he is told to abort and does all he can to stay alive, the trailer leaves off with a bit of a cliffhanger. Is he going to complete the mission? I, for one, can’t wait to see how this one ends. – Kelsey Mejiarodarte
Captain Fantastic
Unconventional. That’s the first thing that came to mind after I saw this trailer. Any film with some sort of emotional mission involved is going to capture the imagination and draw the viewer in. This one has that potential.
Matt Ross both wrote and directed this film. The trailer opens to a family bonding and playing outside. The mother of said family dies of an illness, and the children are devastated. Ben (Mortensen), the father of the mourning children, tries his best to cling to the type of life his late wife and he had made for their children, pretty much off the grid and isolated from the life most of us can relate to. He ends up making the journey to his father-in-law’s house, overcoming obstacles and making the best decisions he is able along the way. His children have never known any other life than the one Ben has shown them, living in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. Integrating into a structured life with societal rules proves difficult, and the clip shows us just what that kind of struggle might look like. I am definitely willing to give this one a shot as I am curious to see how this story plays out. – Kelsey Mejiarodarte
