This year has been a big one for the Evil Dead franchise. Aside from the upcoming film Evil Dead Rise which is scheduled to be released on HBO Max later this year, we’re also getting a new video game. As such, there are plenty of reasons for fans to celebrate. Of course, it’s also the perfect opportunity to look back at what the franchise has offered fans in the past – and that includes the 2013 remake. In fact, this month just marked the ninth anniversary of Evil Dead, and now director Fede Alvarez has taken to Twitter to celebrate. Aside from a series of polaroid photos, he also shared an unused alternate ending for Evil Dead that’s never been seen before.
The alternate ending, which you can see below, shows a rather unfortunate fate for Mia. The character, played by Jane Levy, is taken by the evil “force” much like Bruce Campbell’s Ash is in the ending of the original film. Fede Alvarez elaborated why the ending was changed in the following caption:
“Here it is. This is what was written originally. But Sam Raimi (wisely) pointed out “after everything she’s been through, she deserves to live” so I rewrote it to the actual ending. (@jcolburnlevy let out one of her best screams in the movie on this take) #EvilDead9years”

Interestingly, Fede Alvarez also shared a piece of the script’s first draft. As you can see below, it details that the unused ending with Mia would’ve went a tad further with her demise. After the evil “force” takes her, it would continue to lift her into the sky. As Mia struggles to escape, the “force” would then crush her and she would explode into gallons of blood and guts.
Here. I found the page from the first draft. There was a bit more action to follow the force catching up with her. #EvilDead9years pic.twitter.com/hJ7UAB6k4K

It’s quite a different ending to say the least, but one that shows all of the interesting directions and potential that an Evil Dead film can have.
