It’s been revealed that the classic 1886 novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde will be getting a brand-new adaptation. The new film, which is simply titled Doctor Jekyll, will star none other than Eddie Izzard as Nina Jekyll. They’ll be joined by director Joe Stephenson, who developed the screenplay with first-time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern.
As revealed by Variety, the new film will be a modern interpretation of the iconic source material. This should certainly be exciting news for fans of the original novella or its several past adaptations. With a new interpretation of the story, there’s certainly no shortage of potential.
Here’s what Eddie Izzard had to say about playing Nina Jekyll in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll movie:
“I am very excited to be playing the role of Nina Jekyll in this new feature film and it’s wonderful to be able to reimagine this classic story in a modern way.”
Director Joe Stephenson added the following statement:
“I’m thrilled that Eddie is joining us as my Nina Jekyll. With her being the extraordinary and versatile actress she is, playing against Scott’s natural talent to make us believe in the good in people, I can’t wait to bring this suspenseful take on the iconic classic to life.”
As for the basic setup of the film:
“The film follows the reclusive Nina Jekyll finding friendship with her newly hired help, Rob, played by emerging actor Scott Chambers who must work together to prevent Hyde from destroying her life.”
The film is scheduled to begin production in the U.K. later this week. The film will be produced by London’s B Good Picture Company, in association with Fluidity Films. Stephenson produces with Guy de Beaujeu with Liam Coutts associate producing. Christian Angermayer serves as executive producer.
