It seems that Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is now one of the latest celebrities to be targeted by cancel culture. In particular, many Twitter users are pointing out past examples of Dwayne Johnson using problematic remarks after he first supported and then went against podcaster Joe Rogan. Many of these remarks come from Dwayne Johnson’s wrestling persona, in which he used them as attempts at humor. But in today’s climate, they’re nothing more than fuel for the fire to get Dwayne Johnson cancelled.
In some of the below videos, Dwayne Johnson made remarks making fun of the Chinese language, transgender people, and other such phrases or actions that are not considered appropriate by the public. Of course, it’s worth noting that most of these examples are Dwayne Johnson in character and not really him talking as himself. Nevertheless, it seems cancel culture is still eager to bring these instances to light.
As you can see for yourself:
This violent video from @TheRock has me literally shaking.
What else is out there, DJ?

Indeed, it makes sense why people would want to take these videos and try to make a debacle out of them. There’s a lot of material that definitely wouldn’t be allowed on screen today. With that said, however, the videos are clearly old enough that there shouldn’t be such an urgency to have Dwayne Johnson outright cancelled. It’s clear that his behavior since then has changed and that he’s attempting to do better for today’s audiences and his fans. As the saying goes, it’s better to become a hypocrite than to have never changed at all.
In any case, some individuals have still managed to defend Dwayne Johnson, which you can see in the below tweet:
Given that it was 11 years ago, at a time when the national dialogue didn’t include any discussion of trans people, maybe relax a bit?

With so many people both against and in defense of Dwayne Johnson, however, it’ll be interesting to see what happens going forward.
