Since 2008, Robert Downey Jr. has played Tony Stark six times on screen, with his Seventh set for release May 6th and his Eighth, Ninth and Tenth lined up already with Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinty Wars Part 1 and 2 respectively, so it would be understandable if he was looking to put the character to bed. Alas, this doesn’t seem to be case as the actor has expressed interest in playing him at least one more time.
A recent Nightline special for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War saw the cast on hand to discuss the film with the key focus being on the films ‘Airport Battle’ however talk eventually turned to Robert Downey Jr. and his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was when asked about potential fourth solo outing in the Iron Man franchise that he made a startling revelation, telling the host:
“I feel like I could do one more.”
This is certainly a change of heart from the actor, who has previously been very tepid to idea of Iron Man 4, perhaps he’s looking to make another $50 Million to retire comfortably on. Nevertheless it would be great to see the character back in his own solo film, perhaps letting him face off against the real Mandarin hinted at in the All Hail The King one-shot.
Given that Marvel already has a full slate of films ahead and that Downey Jr. himself will likely be in his mid-fifties by the time it’s released – this could just be wishful thinking. Hopefully, we’ll be given an official competition sometime soon.
