It was recently revealed Texas Chainsaw Massacre had been acquired by Netflix, the latest installment in the long running slasher franchise. The new horror film will act as a direct sequel to the original 1974 film. Of course, fans have been anxious to know more about the horror movie – and now we have two new images as well as its highly anticipated release date.
As noted via Entertainment Weekly, fans won’t have to wait long for the new film. It’s due to hit Netflix in February! They also spoke with producer Fede Alvarez, who gave away some exciting details about the plot.
Here’s what Fede Alvarez had to say about Leatherface in the film:
“It’s basically the same character, who is still alive. Our take on it was this guy probably disappeared after everything he’s done. You know, how do you catch a guy who has a mask? Once he removes the mask and runs away, it’s very easy for him to hide somewhere. This story will pick it up many, many years after the original story. He’s been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person.
“These people arriving in this town are going to awaken the giant.”
Although Fede Alvarez also noted the film might not skip everything between the original and this.
“When I say ‘direct sequel’ I wouldn’t say it skips everything,” Álvarez explains. “When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it’s so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it’s up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen.”
It certainly sounds as though this new take on the original film will be an exciting and authentic sequel. Hopefully we’ll have more details on the film soon, especially with its released scheduled to arrive in just a few months. But these new Texas Chainsaw Massacre images, which you can see below, are definitely a great glimpse for what’s to come.
David Blue Garcia directed the film based on a screenplay written by Chris Thomas Devlin.
The cast for the film includes Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Alice Krige, Jacob Latimore, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Sam Douglas, William Hope, and Jolyon Coy. Olwen Fouéré will play Sally Hardesty and Mark Burnham will play Leatherface.
Fans will finally be able to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre when it premieres on Netflix on February 18, 2022.
